Gene Franks is a Product of Another Time
Working in Gouache (opaque watercolor) and transparent watercolor on imported acid-free papers Gene Franks paints in precise detail with an astonishing variety of strokes. Whether portraying an ancient decaying barn, a weathered face or a canopied road through a hollow, each work is depicted with subtle charm and compelling grace.
Knowing he was to be an artist at age 10, yet lacking opportunity for expression, Gene felt ever the "square peg". Grandparents who travelled by horse and wagon raised him. Grateful for the experience, but needing to find art education, he fled his pioneer-like upbringing in Arkansas at age 17 and headed for the West Coast.
Sidelined by World War II and the Korean conflict, yet blessed with the GI Bill, Gene was finally able to achieve his goal. He graduated from Jefferson Mackhammer School of Art in Santa Monica, California in 1951. He subsequently studied at Art Center School in Los Angeles for a short time also.

In 1991 Gene made a dramatic career change and moved back to Arkansas with his wife Jane, an author of essays and memoir. Gene's purpose now is to inform his world of the natural beauty and mystique that is here. His challenge is to keep a balance between absorbing the past while presenting his work with contemporary style.
