 Jay Schmidt was born in 1929 in Wichita, Kansas. Much of his childhood was spent on the farms of Kansas and Oklahoma where he developed an attachment to rural life. His fascination for animals which began on the farms is evident today in his western paintings. Drawing and painting came easily and by the time of high school graduation in Oakland, California, he had gained considerable recognition. These honors included three Gold Keys in the National Scholastic Art competition and a scholarship to The California School of Fine Arts.
Jay's college education, a BA and tow years of graduate work, placed art on the back burner and prepared him for the Baptist ministry, when after fifteen years as a pastor, his health forced him to a much lighter work load, Jay returned to his pallet and easel.
In his early years in art, Jay received personal instruction from and was deeply influenced by such friends as Ralph Love, western landscapist; Ray Swanson, painter of the American Indian; and Vaughn Shoemaker, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner in political cartooning.
The artist and his wife, Priscilla have four children, all of whom are professional artists. Tim paints the Monterey California coastline, Marcia does commissioned portraits and landscapes. Her husband, George Molnar, is well known for his American Indian portraits. Brenda's art centers around Navajo children. Brad paints various subjects of the Southwest and Central America.
