Ed Mell was working as a commercial illustrator in New York when he began a teaching job on the Hopi reservation in Arizona. In the artist's words, "All of a sudden I found myself in this great landscape with these wonderful people and it triggered something in me. I wanted to express my feelings about the landscape, the strength of it and that's where my angularity came from - the power in the geometry of the landscape."
An Arizona native, Ed Mell finds inspiration for his landscape paintings on frequent helicopter flights over the desert. Back at his easel, he doesn't record what he's seen but instead interprets it in a deeply felt style that's all his own.
A cactus garden outside his studio provides inspiration for Mell's flower studies - intimate pieces scaled up to express their own quiet grandeur.
